This may be the last time that Manet painted Victorine Meurent. She’s ten years older now than in the days of “Olympia” and “Le déjeuner sur l’herbe”. The young girl is the daughter of Alphonse Hirsch (1843-1884), a painter and friend of Manet who had a garden with a view on the railroad. That’s where this scene is set. The houses in the background are in the rue St. Pétersbourg. Manet was living there in n° 4, from where he too had a view on the Gare St. Lazare.
